Begun in 2002, our committee works to improve literacy by letting children read to dogs in a quiet setting. The first such program in Mid-Michigan, sessions are in schools, libraries, and by invitation. Look for a Tale-Waggers™ session at the Mt. Pleasant Veterans Memorial Library and Alma Public Library several times a year.
Formed by MPMKC in 2002, we officially changed the name of this committee in 2005. Each child registered in the Tale-Waggers™ program receives a free book at the end of a 4-week session. More than $1200 worth of books have been given to community children since 2002, through this committee. For background information on Tale-Waggers™ click here, or Contact Chairperson: Alice Jenicke.

Mortar Board donates Books to
Tale-Waggers
Tori, chairperson of CMU's Mortar Board "Trick or Treat for Books," is shown here with co-chairs of MPMKC Tale-Waggers, delivering more than 100 books gathered in the recent drive. CMU's Mortar Board is a chapter of the national honor society and literacy programs are one of their annual events. MPMKC is delighted to have this support from CMU.
In October 2005 our members braved the cold, rainy day to help raise money for HATS programs. We have continued to participate in this activity each year since then.
Parades
Kennel club members like to participate in parades in Mount Pleasant and other local communities. Some of the dogs even pull their own parade floats! Shown below are carting dogs Cruise and Ruby and Zulu and Cruise carting in local parades.
Grandparents U
Since 2008, Mt. Pleasant Kennel Club members have participated in Grandparents U at Central Michigan University. This exciting summer camp brings grandparents and their grandkids
together for three days of fun on the campus of CMU. In 2009, 45 children and their grandparents attended the MPMKC "class" and our theme for the program was "Therapeutic Use of Animals."
The 2010 class was "Paws in Action" and MPMKC members demonstrated many canine sports as well as other ways that dogs enrich our lives.

Kennel club dogs do a wide variety of other activities in Mount Pleasant and surrounding communities. For example, Charlie was the star of the show in the 2007 production "Of Mice and Men."
Our dogs are participants in many other events and are also frequent visitors to local hospitals and nursing homes for therapy work.
Mt. Pleasant MI Kennel Club meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
No meetings in July, August or December.
